In Singapore, it is required by law for all users of a motor vehicle to have a valid insurance policy. To drive or be in charge of a vehicle on the roads without a motor vehicle insurance policy is an offence regarded most severely. The penalty is a fine of up to $1,000 or imprisonment of up to 3 months, or both. Upon conviction, offenders will also be disqualified from holding a driving license for at least 12 months. This is certainly most painful, especially for those who depend on their license for their livelihood (e.g. taxi drivers).
